Campaign statement

For the last 18 months 11 families have struggled with the knowledge that their son, brother, or father has been locked away in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has been kept without charge, he has been deprived of access to a solicitor, but despite this he is being interrogated. Concern about the physical and mental health of the prisoners is growing. There have been 28 suicide attempts since the camp was opened.

Two of the British citizens have recently been put forward for trial, Feroz Abassi and Moazzam Baig. Their families are demanding that this government, that our prime minister, Tony Blair, insists that the US government release these men and send them home to be tried before a British court of law. They want to know what evidence the US has against these men, they want to know the charges on which they are to be tried.

We all want to know!

Under protest the US government has lifted the threat of the death penalty from these Feroz Abassi and Moazzam Baig if they plead guilty. They are expected to plead guilty before knowing what crime they have been charged with and on what evidence these charges are based.

Every aspect of this situation is in violation of international law and international standards of justice. Our prime minister in failing to insist on the repatriation of these men is assisting in the tearing up of international standards of justice.

This campaign has been formed to assist the families in their struggle to have the men returned to Britain for a fair trial.
