Feroz Abbasi and Moazzam Begg
Condemned to Death?

Wednesday 23 July, 7.30 pm at The Library Theatre, Birmingham Central Library, Chamberlain Square, Birmingham City Centre.

Main speaker: Gareth Peirce, legal representative for the family of Moazzam Begg.

What will prevent these two British citizens, held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, from being tried before a military tribunal, on unknown charges, having had no access to legal representation throughout the 18 months of their detention? They will be amongst the first to be tried under conditions that deny them every basic right granted to prisoners by international law. This should be deeply troubling to us as British citizens.

We can imagine how brutal their conditions must be from the fact that in the first three months there had been 14 suicide attempts made by 11 individuals. The most recently reported attempt was made by Feroz Abbasi on Sunday July 13 (Daily Jung Monday July 14).

On Tuesday, 15 July 2003 it was announced that David Blunkett refused to accept their return because he could not guarantee to the Bush administration that the prisoners would be tried in a British court. Why? Because a British court would demand a standard of evidence that it is doubtful the US will be able to produce.

We insist on their return. This decision must not be allowed to stand. Our government should not be able to condone the detention and trial of prisoners under these conditions.

We say; Publish the charges! Bring them home! Give them access to legal representation!
